Free software to help you do business

2nd November 2012 in Business

We all know the well know phrase “there’s no such thing as a free lunch” and whenever I’m offered something for free, I always think about the ulterior motive.

However, being in this line of business, we can separate the good from the bad and find those which are actually free without any real obligation.

With the growing trend for software to be web-based, or dare I say “in the cloud” from a business perspective you can potentially save hundreds, if not thousands of pounds…..bet that got your attention!  Here’s our top 3 free software apps:-

MailChimp
www.mailchimp.com
MailChimp allows you to send bulk email messages (such as this e-bulletin) to a mailing list.  What’s special about this is the ability to track how many people opened your message.  In the free version there’s a wide selection of email templates and you can send a whopping 12,000 emails per month to a list of up to 2,000 subscribers.

Dropbox
www.dropbox.com
If you’ve ever struggled to synchronise files between more than one computer and/or mobile device, you’ll be blown away by Dropbox.  Apart from the very clever software which sits on each computer/device to ensures files can be synchronised in real time, it has the added benefit of acting like an off-site backup.  You can also share folders with anyone you like through the Dropbox website.  Under the free “basic” account, you get 2GB of space which for a “swap” area, is more than ample.

Skype
www.skype.com
With Skype it really is “good to talk”.  You can talk (using a headset or a Skype handset) to anyone else with a Skype account absolutely free, which is particularly good if you make lots of international calls, or if you travel a lot.  It is compatible with webcam for quality video chat and by adding calling credit, you can make landline calls at a cheap rates.

You are welcome to give us a call if you wish to discuss how your business can take advantage of any of these applications, we have the experience to help you set-up these apps.

Why you should mobile optimise your business

1st October 2012 in Mobile Marketing

It surprises me how many businesses don’t appreciate the importance of mobile marketing.  Specifically, getting your business in front of the growing number of people using smart phones as part of their daily lives is now equally important as having a sign on your front door.

I don’t mean sending text messages to hundreds of unexpecting mobile numbers in an attempt to get more customers, I mean the emerging technology whereby websites and apps are “location aware”.

A common misconception is this technology is for “young people”, well it’s not, and here’s why.  Technology is changing so rapidly that more and more devices, including Sat Navs, are using online directories / search to improve the experience.

The technology is also becoming easier to use (like the iPad for example) and there’s also the fact the most mobile phones nowadays are “smart” and as the sale of these phones increase, so does the market.

To give you an example, imagine you are on holiday and in an area which you are not familiar with.  If you want to know if there is a bar/restaurant within walking distance of your accommodation,  your smart phone (with the right app) can give you a list but with the added benefit of reviews, contact details and prices.

If your business is not mobile optimised, whether it be having a website which is tailored for mobile, developing your own app, or simply being listed on mobile business directories, you could be missing out on what is a rapidly growing market.

You are welcome to give me a call if you wish to discuss how your business can take advantage of this opportunity, we have the experience to make it happen.
